I think it's harder than Fortran, other languages have to be considered
C++ is probably the most difficult language, not to mention the ancient assembly language. To be able to study the Linux kernel, I think it will take at least 5~8 years(depending on the understanding and time and energy spent every day). C++ is a very complex body of knowledge with new features.
